Subcontracting can offer some substantial benefits to a small business. One of the biggest benefits is that the major management and financial responsibility for executing the contract falls to the prime contractor. Subcontracting is also an excellent way to “learn the ropes” in dealing with the federal government.

Three useful sites to help you learn about subcontracting opportunities and how to approach subcontracting are:
http://www.acq.osd.mil/sadbu/publications/subdir/index.html
http://www.selltoairforce.org
http://web.sba.gov/subnet

Once you have some idea about subcontracting, and you would like to pursue subcontracting opportunities with federal prime contractors, you should register on the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) and continue with the small business registration part of the application. Prime contractors search the CCR everyday looking for small businesses that fit their needs.

Lastly, it is a wise strategy to go to the appropriate websites of large prime contractors and register on their company websites. You may also want to send your company’s capabilities to the Prime Contractor’s Small Business Liaison Officer (SBLO).

A few large New England Prime Contractors’ websites are listed below:

Bath Iron Works http://www.gdbiw.com
Cianbro  http://www.cianbro.com/
General Dynamics  http://www.gd.com
Raytheon Co.  http://raytheon.com
Textron Systems  http://www.textron.com

Please contact the Maine PTAC to help put you into contact with subcontracting opportunities and to help develop a subcontracting strategy.
